Transforming Surplus into Sustenance
In Makueni County—Kenya's leading mango producer with over 4.3 million trees—up to 40% of the harvest went to waste each year. Judy Mwende Mutunga grew up watching tonnes of nutritious fruit rot while communities elsewhere faced malnutrition.
In 2020, she founded Ustawi Foods Limited, a social enterprise that transforms surplus mangoes and indigenous crops into nutrient-rich products. The name "Ustawi" means "well-being" in Swahili—capturing our mission to nourish both people and the planet.
Today, Ustawi has onboarded over 500 farmers across Makueni, creating jobs for youth, supporting parents to educate their children, and delivering precooked, organic food products that are healthy, affordable, and ready in minutes.
